OUR STRATEGIC PARTNERS
SHIWAKUTA operates within a broad network of strategic partners and platforms that strengthen its technical capacity, policy influence, and programmatic reach. Through these collaborations, the organization advances agroecology, farmer-led development, and inclusive food systems transformation at local, national, regional, and continental levels.
Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA)
SHIWAKUTA is an active member of AFSA and collaborates closely in implementing strategic initiatives, including agroecological entrepreneurship, territorial markets, and continental advocacy processes. Through this partnership, SHIWAKUTA contributes to regional policy dialogues, movement building, and knowledge exchange platforms that promote food sovereignty and biodiversity-based food systems across Africa. AFSA provides an important continental linkage that amplifies grassroots experiences into African-level policy engagement.
World Rural Forum (WRF)
As a member of the World Rural Forum, SHIWAKUTA engages in global discussions on family farming, rural development, and sustainable agriculture. Collaboration with WRF strengthens the organization’s engagement in international policy processes, particularly those related to the UN Decade of Family Farming. The partnership supports institutional learning, advocacy alignment, and exchange of best practices among farmer organizations globally. SHIWAKUTA championed
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
SHIWAKUTA works with FAO, particularly under the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF), to strengthen Forest and Farm Producer Organizations (FFPOs), promote climate resilience, and improve access to finance and markets for smallholders. FAO collaboration enhances technical rigor, governance standards, and alignment with national and global agricultural development frameworks.
CARI
Through collaboration with CARI, SHIWAKUTA advances advocacy on climate action, particularly in relation to sustainable agriculture, resilience building, and environmentally responsible policy frameworks. The partnership strengthens SHIWAKUTA’s engagement in climate policy processes, supports evidence-informed advocacy positions, and enhances coordination around adaptation and mitigation strategies affecting smallholder farmers. CARI’s support reinforces the organization’s capacity to articulate farmer-centered climate priorities within national and regional climate governance platforms.
IDP
SHIWAKUTA partners with IDP in advancing advocacy interventions focused on Farmer Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) and the development of agroecological small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This collaboration strengthens policy engagement around seed sovereignty, regulatory reforms, and enabling frameworks that support farmer-led seed production and distribution. In addition, IDP supports advocacy efforts aimed at improving the business environment for agroecological SMEs, promoting inclusive market systems, and enhancing institutional recognition of smallholder-driven enterprises within sustainable food value chains
TRIAS
Collaboration with TRIAS focuses on strengthening farmer organizations, cooperative governance, and inclusive economic development. The partnership contributes to institutional capacity building, financial systems strengthening, and improved service delivery for member-based organizations.
Broader Collaborative Network
In addition to formal institutional partnerships, SHIWAKUTA works with a wide range of researchers, consultants, development practitioners, and grassroots leaders who contribute indirectly to program implementation. These collaborations enhance technical expertise, expand outreach, and reinforce cross-sectoral learning.
Platform Memberships and Alliances
SHIWAKUTA actively participates in several thematic platforms to strengthen advocacy and coordination, including:
- Seed Working Group (SWG), contributing to policy advocacy on farmer-managed seed systems and seed sovereignty.
- Agroecological Collaborators in Arusha Forum (ACAF), engaging in agricultural/agroecological policy dialogue and institutional coordination.
- Agroecological Hub, supporting knowledge exchange, innovation scaling, and policy harmonization around agroecology.
Through these strategic partnerships and platform memberships, SHIWAKUTA strengthens its institutional influence, technical capacity, and advocacy reach. The organization leverages these alliances to ensure that local farmer priorities are reflected in national, regional, and global food systems agendas.
