Consultative Workshop on Wood Value in Tanzania

SHIWAKUTA, in collaboration with FAO, successfully organized a Consultative Workshop on Wood Value Chains on 25 March 2025 in Arusha. The workshop aimed at validating research findings on strengthening smallholder tree grower plantations and the wood value chain in Tanzania.
The event brought together around 60 participants, including technical advisers, wood processors, farmer representatives, traders, and other key stakeholders in the sector.
This workshop marks a crucial step towards enhancing the sustainability and profitability of smallholder tree-growing enterprises in Tanzania.
Participants of the Workshop had the opportunity to discuss key challenges facing Tanzania’s Wood Value Chain and potential solutions. One of the main issues identified was that market demand for wood exceeds supply. To address this, a proposed solution was to enhance market systems, such as the out-grower model, which helps capture data on all products reaching the market.
Participants emphasized the need for inclusive policies, training programs, and financial support to ensure women and youth play active roles in the sector. The workshop reinforced that a sustainable and profitable wood industry must create equal opportunities for all stakeholders, shaping future strategies for equitable growth in Tanzania’s wood value chain.
